SÃO FRANCISCO XAVIER PROPERTY GUIDE

The serene, family-friendly neighborhood in between Lisbon and the coast

A Sao Francisco Xavier property: peaceful proximity

Nestled between the invigorating capital city of Lisbon and the luxurious beach towns of Cascais lies a quiet residential patch called Sao Francisco Xavier. With a population of just 8,000 residents and an area of only 518 acres, owning a Sao Francisco Xavier property offers exclusivity in one of Lisbon’s most sought-after suburbs. With proximity to Lisbon and a host of apartments and homes to buy in Sao Francisco Xavier, the opportunities for second-home ownership abound.

Why Sao Francisco Xavier Property?

Sao Francisco Xavier comprises two sub-neighborhoods: Caselas to the north and Restelo to the south. The serene, family-friendly neighborhood in which Sao Francisco Xavier properties can be found is located just north of Belém. This is Lisbon’s last on-the-border suburb before the beach towns begin along the coast. From Sao Francisco Xavier, Lisbon proper is twenty minutes east by car or 35 minutes away by train. Owners of a Sao Francisco Xavier property have access to Lisbon’s International Airport, which is fifteen kilometres away, or they can easily reach the Belem Marina, which is just four kilometres distance. Here, yachts and boats park and embark on the Tagus River.

Summer weather for Sao Francisco Xavier property owners is delightful with average temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit), while winter temperatures dip as low as twelve degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit). Sao Francisco Xavier receives the most rainfall in December with up to 71 millimeters (three inches) of rain. Wind speeds in Belem are highest in July when an average of 19.6 days experience winds of 19 kilometers per hour. The best time to enjoy water sports and swimming along the coast is in August when water temperatures reach up to 21 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). July and September experience only slightly lower water temperatures, still fitting for water activities.

Residents are within a short distance to Sao Francisco Xavier Hospital. They also can reach Egas Moniz Hospital in ten minutes by car. Sao Francisco Xavier is under the jurisdiction of the 26th squadron of the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), which is located in Praca Alfonso de Albuquerque.

International residents who own a Sao Francisco Xavier property can choose from two campuses of the Park International School: The College at Restelo and The College at Belem.

Ambiance and lifestyle

Sao Francisco Xavier’s location close to the coast provides ample opportunities to spend weekends at the beach. Alges Beach lies just over five kilometers west of Sao Francisco Xavier. A line of other beaches extends west from there, including Praia da Cruz Quebrada, Praia de Caxias, and Praia da Giribita.

As well as lazing on the beach, sunny days can be spent putting around the greens of some of Europe’s best golf courses. A handful of these are a short drive from Sao Francisco Xavier properties. The Centro Nacional de Formação de Golfe do Jamor is 5 kilometers away. Oeiras Golf is 15 kilometers due north. The Estoril Palacio golf course is twenty kilometers west, and the world-renowned Quinta de Marinha golf course—home to Oitavos Dunes—is thirty kilometers further west toward the Atlantic Ocean.

Also bordering the Atlantic Ocean is the imposing Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Here, Sao Francisco Xavier residents can dive into nature through hiking, cycling, and other outdoor adventures.

Sao Francisco Xavier’s position as a suburb of Belem puts second home buyers just one neighborhood away from the bustling town, a thriving extension of Lisbon. Belem is home to both the Navy Museum and the National Archeology Museum, and both are on the grounds of the Jeronimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Residents can enjoy long, luxurious walks through the Belem Gardens while admiring the imperial palace and Belém’s Cultural Center. The center hosts myriad events such as concerts, ballets, and art exhibitions and also serves as the location of the impressive Berardo Collection Museum.

Sao Francisco Xavier is graced with two Michelin-star restaurants where residents can dine on exquisitely-prepared dishes in opulent settings. Food is a full art demonstration at Feitoria, an Italian restaurant and patio in the Altis Belem Hotel. Traditional Portuguese cuisine elegantly sings through dishes at Solar dos Nunes on Rua dos Lusiadas, just east of Belem.

In addition to periodic live performances, Belem Cultural Center hosts the annual classical music festival. Held in April, residents can attend any of more than 70 concerts in just a few days. Springtime also introduces Sao Francisco Xavier residents to the annual sailing regatta known as King Juan Carlos’ Cup, when boats take to the waters between Estoril and Cascais with spectators looking on from the beaches. Meanwhile, the Lisbon Golf Coast Festival takes place at courses around the region. Come June and July, the Tagus River plays host to Cascais International Sailing Week.

Purchasers of a Sao Francisco Xavier property can enjoy the tranquility of a tucked-away setting. Simultaneously, you’ll be at the doorstep of luxury and liveliness.
